Modals adalah kata-kata seperti can, may; will, shall, must, could, might, would, could, dan lain-lain.

Pure modals, seperti can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might, must, dan would rather, diikuti bare infinitive (V 1—tanpa ‘to’). Saat mengungkapkan suatu keadaan atau situasi (saat kalimat tidak memiliki suatu kata kerja/verb), modal ini harus diikuti oleh kata ‘be’ (bentuk dasar dari to be).

Quasi/periphrastic modals, seperti have to, ought to, used to, be able to, be about to, be to, be supposed to, dan be allowed to, maknanya sama dengan pure modals, namun mayoritas dianggap verbs.

Silahkan lihat gambar berikut ini:

Contoh kalimat:

  • I will enter UNS after passing my senior high school, (modal + V)
  • You can ask me for help if you like, (modal + V)
  • She could be right, (modal + be)
  • I will be late. (modal + be)
  • You'll soon be able to watch almost all NFL games online.
  • Soon, you may not be allowed to carry laptops in check-in luggage.
