Apa perbedaan 'above', 'over', dan 'on' untuk menyatakan lokasi benda di atas / tinggi serta bagaimana contoh kalimatnya?

Above dan over dapat digunakan untuk menyampaikan pengertian ‘di atas/lebih tinggi dari’.

Contoh:

• The water came up above/over our knees.
• Can you see the helicopter above/over the palace?

Saat maknanya ‘meliputi’ atau ‘melintasi’ kita menggunakan over.

Contoh:

• The plane was flying over Kuningan.
• The electricity cables stretch over the field.
• There’s thick cloud over the East of Bandung.

Jika on, above, dan over bermakna di atas, on dipakai bilamana benda yang satu menyentuh yang lainnya , sementara above dan over dipakai bilamana benda yang satu dengan yang lain tidak bersentuhan.

Contoh:

• The lamp is over the table.
• There is a bridge over the river.
• The ceiling is over the floor.

Jika sebuah benda menyentuh yang lain, maka over dapat berarti (mungkin) benda yang satu menutupi benda yang lain.

• The mat lay over the floor.
• The cover is over the bed.

Over digunakan untuk menyampaikan makna benda yang menyeberangi benda yang lain.

Contoh:

• The boy threw a stone over the fence.
• The plane is flying over the cloud.

Pemakaian above hampir sama dengan over, tetapi above menekankan bahwa suatu benda tetap berada di atas benda yang lain (tidak bergerak).

Contoh:

• He’s hanging a cloth lampshade above the table.
• The sky is above us.
