Much dan many memiliki arti ‘banyak’. Much diikuti uncountable noun, sementara many diikuti countable noun.

Contoh:

  • much time
  • much luck
  • much energy
  • much money
  • many friends
  • many people
  • many cars
  • many countries

Kita menggunakan a lot (of)/lot (of), plenty of untuk dirangkai dengan uncountable dan plural noun.

Contoh:

  • a lot of/lots of/ plenty of time
  • a lot of/lots of/plenty of luck
  • a lot of/lots of/ plenty of energy
  • a lot of/lots of/ plenty of money
  • a lot of/lots of/plenty of friends
  • a lot of/lots of/plenty of people
  • a lot of/lots of/ plenty of cars
  • a lot of/lots of/plenty of countries

Plenty mengandung pengertian ‘lebih dari cukup’.

Contoh:

  • ‘Have some more to eat!’—No, thank you. I’ve had plenty.’
  • ‘There’s no need to hurry. We’ve got plenty of time.’

Kita menggunakan many/much utamanya dalam kalimat pertanyaan dan negatif. Dalam kalimat positif kita lebih cenderung menggunakan a lot of.

Contoh:

  • We didn’t spend much money.
  • Have you got many friends?
  • We spent a lot of money.
  • There has been a lot of rain recently.

Bila dirangkai dengan kata too (terlalu) very (sangat) dan so (begitu) kita menggunakan many dan much, walaupun dalam kalimat pernyataan.

Contoh:

  • I can’t drink this tea. There’s too much sugar in it.
