Contoh percakapan bahasa Inggris mengandung preference

Setelah belajar tentang berbagai penerapan preference dalam kalimat, kini kita mempelajari preference dalam cakupan yang lebih lengkap, yakni percakapan. Hampir sama seperti panduan dalam contoh kalimat pada poin sebelumnya, bold menunjukkan preference, garisbawah menunjukkan kata atau frasa yang dekat dengan preference, dan arti ada pada tiap baris percakapan.

Setelah contoh percakapan yang berikut ini, kita akan menyimak penjelasannya yang berkaitan dengan materi pelajaran preference:

Rika: I see those maniacal supporters cheering loudly… What are they up to?

(Rika: Aku melihat para suporter maniak itu bersorak dengan keras… Mereka mau apa sebenarnya?)

Rina: S-Sis! Those were not just supporters. They are the one who make our friends scatter all around the stadium!

(Rina: K-Kak! Mereka bukan hanya suporter. Mereka adalah kelompok yang membuat teman-teman kami tercerai-berai sekitar stadion!)

Rika: What do you mean?!

(Rika: Apa maksudmu?!)

Niki: *pulls on both of Rika and Rina’s hands* They might create more chaos if we stay. Let’s get over here!

(Niki: *menarik tangan Rika dan Rina* Mereka mungkin akan membuat lebih banyak kekacauan kalau kami tinggal. Mari pergi dari sini!)

Rika and Rina: T-Thanks a lot…

Acara kuis kecil-kecilan dalam contoh percakapan di atas melukiskan betapa luasnya preference dengan keempat kategorinya, seperti yang telah dijelaskan dalam poin penjelasan itu. Kita pun dapat belajar lebih banyak variasi preference yang dapat memperluas pemahaman kita.

Pertama, bagaimanapun panjangnya keterangan waktu, tempat, orang, cara, dan lain-lain pada bentuk preference “would rather (than)”, selalu prioritaskan pasangan verb yang sama derajatnya. Contohnya dapat kita lihat pada “speak” (berbicara) dan “remain” (diam saja) yang sama-sama merupakan verb 1 dan terapit bersama dengan “than” pada dialog Rika.

Hal yang sama juga berlaku untuk “like/better than” sebagai salah satu kategori preference. Dalam contoh percakapan, kita melihat adanya “mingling” (berbaur, dari asal kata “mingle” yang artinya berbaur) dan “sitting” (duduk, dari asal kata “sit” yang artinya duduk) yang terapit bersama “better than” dan ada pada dialog Pia, di mana keduanya sama-sama verb+ing.

Contoh verb+ing lain dalam percakapan adalah “meditating” (bermeditasi, dari “meditate” atau meditasi) dengan “attending” (menghadiri, dari “attend” yang berarti datang) yang melekat pada preference “prefer to” pada porsi dialog Hina. Satu lagi, “had better not” seperti pada baris dialog Rina adalah bentuk preference negatif dari “had better”, dan harus selalu diikuti dengan verb 1, seperti “choose” (memilih).
