The Planet Earth

Our planet Earth is the fifth biggest planet out of eight planets in our Solar System, which orbiting the nearest star which is the Sun. The Earth moves in space with the speed of about 30 kilometers per second and needs one whole year to complete the whole circle. Moreover, the Earth rotates on its axis in every 24 hours. This makes the Sun appears as if it rises at dawn, passes through the sky and sets at dusk, giving us days and nights.
Actually the Earth is not a perfect ball with equal measurements. The length of the equatorial line is 12,756 kilometers, while the distance between the North Pole and the South Pole is 12,714 kilometers.

1. What is the text about?

A. The Earth.
B. Our Solar System.
C. The Sun.
D. The North Pole.

2. orbiting the nearest star which is the Sun.”

The underlined word means ....

A. move across
B. move through
C. move around
D. move ahead

3. From the text we can conclude that there are ... planets in the Solar System that are smaller than the Earth.

A. one
B. two
C. three
D. four

4. From the data in the text, we know that

A. the equatorial line is longer than the axis line
B. the equatorial line is shorter than the axis line
C. the equatorial line and the axis line are of the same length
D. the axis line is longer than the equatorial line

Pluto

When it was first discovered in 1930, Pluto was grouped into the Solar System as the ninth planet. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) regarded this heavenly body as a dwarf planet.

Pluto is a tiny planet, with an even smaller size than the Moon. It has an oval-shaped orbit around the Sun. Its period to complete the full orbit is equal with 248 years of the Earth's evolution. Its oval-shaped orbit causes differences in planet orders. Sometimes its orbit is closer to the Sun than Neptune’s.
Pluto has three moons, named Charon, Nix, and Hydra. These three objects have the same natural color as the Moon, unlike Pluto's pinkish color. Some scientists even called Pluto and Charon as double planets, due to their similar sizes. Charon is only a bit smaller than Pluto.

5. What is the text about?

C. Pluto is not a dwarf planet.
D. Pluto is destroyed.

7. Which is CORRECT according to the text?

A. Pluto is bigger than the Moon.
B. Pluto’s orbit is inside Neptune’s orbit.
C. Pluto is smaller than Charon.
D. Pluto’s color is pink.

8. “In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) regarded this heavenly body as a dwarf planet." (paragraph 1)

Earth Day

Earth Day is a day dedicated to the environmental health of our planet. Earth Day is observed in the United States, Canada, and many other countries around the world with programs designed to educate people about Earth’s environment and threats to the environment. Activities intended to improve the environment also take place. Earth Day is most often celebrated on April 22, but some people observe it on March 21, the first day of spring. Activities surrounding Earth Day may continue for weeks or months.

Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970. The idea for a nationwide demonstration in support of Earth’s environment came from Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. Nelson is considered the founder of Earth Day. (From Microsoft Encarta, 2006)

9. What is an Earth Day?

A. The day when the Earth was born.
B. April 22.
C. The first day of spring.
D. A day dedicated to respect the Earth.

10. “Earth Day is observed in the United States, Canada, and many other countries around the world.” (paragraph 1)

Kuiper Belt

Kuiper Belt is a collection of frozen objects extending from just beyond the orbit of the planet Neptune to well beyond the orbit of the former planet Pluto. The larger members of the belt are called Kuiper Belt Objects, or KBOs. Smaller members of the Kuiper Belt are usually reformed to as comets. The orbits of these objects show that the belt is actually disc-shaped.

The existence of the Kuiper Belt was first predicted during the mid-20th century, most notably by Dutch American astronomer Gerard Kuiper. Kuiper and other astronomers expected that a debris belt, similar to the asteroid belt of rocky material that orbits the Sun between Mars and Jupiter but composed of icy material, might lie beyond Neptune.
(From Microsoft Encarta, 2006)
