Dialog I

A: Have you seen an obstetrician before coming here? (Sudahkah Anda menemui dokter kandungan sebelum datang kemari?)

B: No, I haven’t. I just noticed that I haven’t been in my period for 2 months and my husband suggested that I took a pregnancy test. The result was obviously positive. (Belum.

A: Do you remember when your last menstruation period was? (Apakah Anda ingat kapan terakhir menstruasi?)

B: I’m not sure, but if I’m not mistaken, it was by the end of September.

A: Is it your first pregnancy? (Apakah ini kehamilan pertama Anda?)

B: Actually, yes. We weren’t planning for this and it made me worried so much. I was having a really unhealthy lifestyle last month—I’m worried about the baby.

A: We’ll have an examination to count how many weeks you’ve been pregnant and see if everything’s okay. We’ll also see if an ultrasound report is needed.

Dialog II

A: How long have you been pregnant? (Berapa usia kehamilan Anda?)

B: It’s been 20 weeks. I’m in my second trimester now. (Sudah 20 minggu. Saya dalam trimester kedua saya sekarang)

A: And how are things going? (Dan bagaimana kabarnya?)

B: Well, I’m not sure if it’s morning sickness but I keep vomiting this whole week. I didn’t know I would have it in two trimesters.

A: It’s actually normal to have morning sickness throughout your first and second trimester. Any other symptoms you complain of?

B: Heartburn. It hurts so much, especially when I have to throw up. It also made me lose a lot of weight. (Mulas/panas pada ulu hati. Sakit sekali, khususnya jika saya mau muntah.

A: I need to know what you’ve been eating because this might have something to do with it. Let me guess, you did have problems with your stomach before your pregnancy, didn’t you?

B: Yeah, I think I had a stomach disorder.  (Ya, saya rasa saya punya gangguan perut)

A: We’ll make sure you have a healthy diet after this.

Dialog III

A: So, what are you feeling? (Jadi, apa yang Anda rasakan?)

B: I still suffer from a lot of heartburn during my third trimester but things get better this week. Now I’m just really nervous about the delivery. The estimated due date is next month. Sekarang saya hanya sangat gugup tentang melahirkannya. Perkiraan tanggal kelahirannya bulan depan)

A: Any other thing you want to complain of?

B: Well I’m feeling a lot better actually. I was just wondering if it’s okay for me to fly on the airplane; because I was thinking about giving birth in my hometown. It’s only an hour flight. Perjalanannya hanya satu jam)

A: From all the check-ups we have, I conclude it might be safe but you do have to confirm it with the airline doctor. They’ll be the one who decide. It’s also better to fly sooner because the closer it is to your due date, the less chance you’ll have. You know, some people deliver their babies earlier than expected.

B: I understand. I’ll talk about it with my husband. (Saya paham. Akan saya bicarakan dengan suami saya)

Latihan soal conversations

Man: Hot today, isn’t?
Woman: Yes, it is. I wish that it would rain and cool off.
Man: Me too. This is unusual for March. I don’t remember it ever being so hot and dry in March before.
According to the conversation, what kind of weather is usual for March?
Man: have you done your slides for the presentation?
Woman: I still need to make a few more slides.
man: Can I give you a hand?
Woman: Sure. Please correct my work and underline the incorrect words.
Man: Sure. Let me do that for you.

What is true about the dialogue?
Alan: Hi, Jon. Do you fancy playing chess?
Joni: Oh, no thanks, I don't really feel like playing chess. How about going out instead.
Alan: it sounds good. Do you like eating at the Padang Restaurant?
Joni: I really do not like it. How about going to the theatre?
Alan: I love it. There is a new movie.
Joni: Well I really keen on it. Let's go.

What does Alan offer to Joni?
Man: Hi Tina, you look so busy. What are you doing?
Woman: I’m finishing the report on my research.
Man: What research is that?
Woman: I didn’t research about the cause of heart attacks. I did it as my assignment in order to get a scholarship.
Why is the girl busy?
Girl: Excuse me. May I see Mr. Kusuma?
Man: I am so sorry. He has just left this room. What can I do for you?
Girl: Just tell him that I have left my assignment on his desk.
Man: Sure. I will inform him of it.
Girl: Thank you.
Man: You're welcome.

What does the girl request the man to do?
Ani: Why are you not choosing English as your study program?
Jeny: I think English is very difficult. It is a lot of practise only on speaking skill.
Ani: ____ it's a lot of practise on writing, listening, also reading.
Fery: Why are you sleepy in the class?
Ina: Do I look sleepy? I'm not sleepy, but I have painful stomachache.
Fery: ____ accompany you to visit the doctor?
Ina: No, thanks.
Man: I don’t know what to order. I could drink everything on the menu.
Woman: Why don’t you try guava juice, orange juice or ice tea?
Man: Guava juice sounds good. I’ll take it.
Woman: I think I’ll have a big glass of cola float.
What would the woman do?
Man: How long have you been out of the country?
Woman: Two weeks and it was amazing.
Man: Where did you go?
Woman: Finland for a week, Scotland for four days and the rest I spent in England.
How long was the woman out of the country?
Girl: Excuse me. May I see Mr. Kusuma?
Man: I am so sorry. He has just left this room. What can I do for you?
Girl: Just tell him that I have left my assignment on his desk.
Man: Sure. I will inform him of it.
Girl: Thank you.
Man: You're welcome.
