Pengertian superlative adjectives

Superlative adjectives adalah kalimat yang digunakan untuk membandingkan dua atau lebih kata benda dengan memberi tambahan ‘the most’ di awal kata sifat atau ‘the … -est’ pada kata sifat. Perlu diketahui bahwa perbandingan dengan superlative adjectives memiliki ‘yang paling’.

Contoh kalimat:

• Anna is the smartest girl in her class. (Anna adalah gadis yang paling pandai di kelasnya.)
• Theo is the most diligent among his brothers. (Theo paling rajin di antara kakak laki-lakinya.)
• Toba lake is the deepest lake in Indonesia. (Danau toba adalah danau terdalam di Indonesia.)

Ada beberapa aturan yang perlu diperhatikan:

• Kata sifat yang terdiri dua atau tiga suku kata (two +syllables), menggunakan tambahan the most sebelum kata sifat. Misalnya: ancient, awful, common, delicate, difficult etc. (cek: daftar kata sifat adjectives)
• Kata sifat yang terdiri satu suku kata (one syllable)diberi tambahan ‘the adjective –est’ dan juga untuk kata sifat dengan dua suku kata dengan akhiran –y (two + syllables ending in –y)juga sama, huruf ‘y’ berubah menjadi ‘i’.

Pola atau rumus kalimatnya:

• the + Most (least) adjective (two +syllables)
• the + Adjective –est (one syllable)
• the + Adjective –est (two + syllables ending in –y)

Contoh:

• It is the easiest

Catatan penting: Jangan menggunakan comparative bentuk –er ketika membandingkan tiga atau lebih benda.

Incorrect: Rena body is the most slim among them.
Correct : Rena body is the slimmest among them.

Incorrect: Rendy is the stronger among his brothers.
Correct : Rendy is the strongest among his brothers.

Incorrect: You are the more diligent in my class.
