Sedikit saya akan membahas dulu fungsi dari past perfect continuous tense:

1. Menyatakan durasi tindakan dimasa lalu sampai titik waktu tertentu dimasa lalu juga.
2. Kalimat pengandaian (conditional sentence tipe 3)
3. Kalimat tidak langsung (reported speech)

Contoh kalimatnya:

Positif:

Rumus: subjek+had+been+verb (-ing)+objek

He had been living in Jakarta about ten years. (Dia telah tinggal di Jakarta selama 10 tahun.)

Negatif:

Rumus: subjek+had+not+been+verb (-ing)+objek

He had not been living in Jakarta about ten years. (Dia belum tinggal di Jakarta sekitar 10 tahun.)

Tanya:

Rumus: had+subjek+been+objek+?

Had he been living in Jakarta about ten years? (Apakah dia telah tinggal di Jakarta selama 10 tahun?)

Contoh kalimat lainnya:

• When the boys came into the house, their clothes were dirty, their hair was untidy, and one had black eye. They had been fighting

  for half an hour when there was a terrible storm.
